The efforts speak volumes about where this White House sees the threats of the 21st century: not on a battlefield in the traditional sense, but in orbit, in data centers, and in labs where the next generation of computing is built.
A New Academy for a New Frontier
On August 28, while honoring the Artemis II crew at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, President Trump signed an executive order establishing a commission to create the U.S. Space Academy—the country’s first federal service academy built specifically around space. Congress must approve funding for the initiative after the commission releases its planning report. According to NASA’s announcement, the school will train the next generation of Space Force Guardians, NASA engineers, and civil space operators. The president compared it directly to West Point, Annapolis, and the Air Force Academy. That comparison matters.
The Washington Post noted the academy will serve the Space Force—the sixth and newest military branch, itself a Trump-era creation from his first term—alongside NASA and the rapidly growing civilian spaceflight industry. According to Military.com, the vision is a taxpayer-funded, full-scholarship institution whose graduates could flow into either civilian federal space service or the Space Force itself—closing a workforce gap that worried space policy experts for years.
As NBC News reported, Trump framed the academy in response to “the rapid growth of the Space Force and the commercial space industry” and America’s expanding ambitions “to the moon and far beyond the moon.” Trump understands that space is a strategic domain, one that requires a dedicated talent pipeline just as the Army (West Point, founded 1802), Navy (Naval Academy, founded 1845), and Air Force (Air Force Academy, founded 1954) already have.
This is exactly the long-horizon thinking that great powers need. China has aggressively built out its own space workforce and military space capability, and countries that win the next fifty years in orbit will start training people for it today. A dedicated academy signals America isn’t just reacting to Chinese advances; it’s building durable, institutional capacity to stay permanently ahead.
Innovating the Financial System
Just days earlier, on August 24, the U.S. Treasury Department announced the Quantum-Readiness Task Force. This public-private initiative is tasked with readying America’s financial sector for a threat that doesn’t fully exist yet: a quantum computer powerful enough to break the cryptography (e.g., secure communication technology) that currently protects nearly every payment, bank account, and digital identity in the country.
As Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent put it in the announcement, “America must lead in securing the technologies that power our economy,” adding the task force “will help ensure our financial system remains strong, secure, and competitive as new technologies reshape the global landscape.”
The task force builds on the G7 Cyber Expert Group’s roadmap for post-quantum cryptography, per the Digital Watch Observatory. According to reporting from AI2Work, the Trump administration goes further than the G7’s voluntary 2035 target, imposing hard federal deadlines—post-quantum key establishment by the end of 2030, and post-quantum digital signatures by the end of 2031—years ahead of what much of the rest of the world has committed to.
That urgency is warranted. Quantum computing research is a global race, and China has invested enormously in it. A financial system still running on cryptography that quantum machines could eventually crack isn’t just a technical vulnerability—it’s a national security one. By moving early and setting binding deadlines rather than aspirational ones, the administration is treating quantum risk the way it should be treated: as a present-day problem, not a someday problem.
A Common Thread
What ties these two announcements together is Trump’s recognition that technological leadership doesn’t happen by accident. It is carefully built through institutions like the Space Academy training people for decades to come, and through initiatives like the Quantum-Readiness Task Force that harden critical infrastructure before adversaries can exploit it.
