The raw wage gap does not compare women and men in the same profession who work the same hours, in the same work conditions, with the same qualifications, experience and talent. Men and women of all races make many different choices based on what’s best for them as individuals and as families, all of which can affect pay. This is not to say that discrimination does not exist. Sadly, women do sometimes still face discrimination in the workplace, even though this is illegal. But the raw wage gap is not a good metric of discrimination because it does not take job-related factors into account.
