In the 20th century, labor unions played a role in securing worker protections, such as the 40-hour work week and greater workplace safety. Since then, however, workers have relied less on unions as they prefer to negotiate employment terms directly with their employers. Now, as unions are highly involved in politics and are influenced by socialist ideas, workers are rejecting unions. Let’s see if you can spot the lie!
A. Unions donate almost exclusively to Democratic candidates and causes.
B. The Democratic Socialists of America target specific workplaces in their nationwide strategy to push socialist ideas in certain jobs.
C. The Democratic Socialists of America criticize the Chinese Communist Party’s model of socialism and its form of authoritarian government.
A. TRUTH! Unions overwhelmingly support Democratic causes, despite their membership’s views ranging across the political spectrum. According to an analysis by the Commonwealth Fund, during the 2023-2024 election cycle, the four largest public sector unions (the National Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, Service Employees International Union, and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) spent over $107 million in support of candidates across local, state, and federal elections. Of that $107 million, unions spent 95.8% supporting Democrats; only 4.2% went to Republicans.
B. TRUTH! The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) use a national strategy called the Rank-and-File Strategy, where they organize workers, salt employees in non-union workplaces, and provide on-the-ground support for strikes. Their goal is to introduce and support socialist ideology in the workplace. While the DSA has traditionally targeted blue-collar occupations—such as the auto, steel, trucking, and telephone industries— it recently shifted its focus to K-12 education, health care, and logistics. The DSA emphasizes national sectors that have a broad effect on the economy when disrupted, supporting strikes and joining workers in picket lines.
C. LIE! The DSA has forged closer ties with China and the Chinese Communist Party in order to advance socialism globally and build allies against the American capitalist system. DSA members have travelled to China, met with Chinese officials, and made plans for future exchanges for DSA members. Some DSA members have even sworn allegiance to China and “to promote understanding of Chinese socialism.” China is using the DSA to rehabilitate its image with left-leaning Americans.
Bottom Line:
The labor movement has contracted because workers prefer to negotiate their own terms of employment without a middleman. As unions overwhelmingly support Democratic politicians, and Democratic Socialists push socialist ideas through their infiltration of unions, workers become suspicious of their aims. Workers deserve transparency from their unions about who they align with and how they use funds.
