When I attended the UFC 250 event this past weekend in Washington, D.C., I had no idea that I was a hair’s breadth away from a targeted terror attack. Not just me, but the tens of thousands of other attendees. UFC fans from every corner of America. Military veterans. Public figures. Cabinet members. The President of the United States.

On June 16th, the FBI announced retroactively that they had prevented a terror attack on the White House and surrounding areas. This attack was orchestrated by a small group on the messaging app Signal; they discussed a plan to use explosive drones on nearby buildings, force a mass evacuation, then funnel the crowd towards a row of snipers. If this succeeded, they then planned to storm the White House.

Several of the conspirators are in custody. One allegedly told investigators the objective was to eliminate wealthy capitalists or politicians who received donations from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

This is hardly the first leftist terror plot. Congressman Steve Scalise was shot in a Congressional baseball game practice session. Vice President JD Vance’s home was attacked. A healthcare CEO was murdered in the street. Multiple assassinations were attempted on the President of the United States. There is an ugly pattern that persists in resurfacing again and again: anti-capitalist, anti-conservative Marxists (with a side of lunacy) resorting to extreme violence in order to ostensibly advance their ideology by force.

Have we really gotten to a place as a country where plans for targeted killings are considered a viable option by Americans who are angry with our political or economic system? And even more important, how did we get here?

Marxists have always believed in using violence to achieve political ends. Their core philosophy is that the working class must overthrow a capitalist or monarchist society to establish a socialist or communist government, by whatever means. These violent actors see themselves as heroes, eliminating the stain of capitalism, so that all can be equal, and so that justice (in their eyes) is finally served.

However, over the past decade, violent rhetoric against conservatives has skyrocketed as well within the mainstream Left, not just the Marxists. When elected leaders invoke words like “fascist,” “dictator,” “Hitler,” or the like, bestowing these epithets on undeserving heads, the public can become radicalized into thinking these statements are true—and then acting on it. Think I’m exaggerating? Here is a minute-and-a-half clip montage of mainstream leftists specifically calling for physical violence, even assassinations.

I attended UFC this weekend with my husband, and I am also currently pregnant. I thank God that he spared my husband, myself, and my little unborn child from a terror attack. It is absolutely incumbent on elected representatives to tone down the rhetoric. Explicitly condoning or even implying the condoning of violence by casting a political opponent as a vile figure worthy of death—and by association, anyone in perceived alignment—is disgusting, reckless, and cruel.

Finally, it’s important for us to recognize the incredible work done by the intelligence community in preventing this attack (and many more attacks we will never know about), and to give thanks for the law enforcement on the ground who added even more layers of security. Everyday Americans living normal lives depend on this protection. It’s what makes normal life possible—the baseline expectation that we can go about our daily lives without the threat of terror looming. I am so grateful to live in a country where brave men and women serve every day to protect Americans. We owe a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.
