WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, First Lady Melania Trump helped reunite another Ukrainian child with her family. The reunion marks the 34th Ukrainian family reunited following the First Lady’s Peace Letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The milestone brings renewed attention to one of the war’s most devastating realities: Russia’s systematic abduction of tens of thousands of Ukrainian children. While their fate has too often been underreported  and overshadowed by war developments and diplomatic negotiations, these reunifications demonstrate what sustained international pressure and engagement can accomplish. 

Independent Women applauds First Lady Melania Trump for keeping the fate of Ukraine’s stolen children before the world, and helping deliver families tangible results.

Dr. Meaghan Mobbs, director of Independent Women’s Center for American Safety and Security, said: 

“First Lady Melania Trump deserves real credit for keeping the fate of Ukrainian children before the world and, most importantly, helping bring children home. Having investigated this issue on the ground in Ukraine, I know that every reunification represents far more than a humanitarian success. It is the restoration of a child to a family, a country, and an identity that Russia sought to sever.

“And it comes at an important moment in this war. Ukraine is not simply surviving. It continues to adapt, impose costs on Russia, and challenge the assumption that Moscow’s eventual victory is inevitable. That matters because Russia’s strategy has always depended on convincing Ukrainians, and the West, that time is on its side.

“Children coming home tells a different story. So does Ukraine’s continued momentum on the battlefield. Neither the human consequences of this war nor its strategic outcome are predetermined.

“The First Lady’s efforts are an important reminder that diplomacy is most meaningful when it produces something tangible—a child returned, a family restored, and one more piece of what Russia tried to take back where it belongs.”

THE STOLEN CHILDREN:

Mobbs, a combat veteran and mom of two daughters, serves as lead investigator in the premiere episode of “Faith in War,” where she highlights the human cost of Russia’s campaign to tear children from their families through on-the-ground investigative reporting.

“The Stolen Children,” released earlier this month, exposes Russia’s systematic abduction of Ukrainian children and follows the extraordinary efforts fighting to bring these children home, reunite with their loved ones, and rebuild their lives.

THE RUSSIA REALITY:

This summer, Independent Women’s Center for American Safety and Security hosted a high-level, one-day summit, “America’s Adversaries: The Russia Reality,” analyzing the evolving threat Russia poses to the United States and the broader West.

As Russia escalates its attacks on Ukraine, diplomatic efforts continue between President Donald J. Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and there has been a decisive shift in momentum—and in public opinion—in the war.

Independent Women’s Russia Survey found that ninety-two percent (92%) of voters expressed outrage that Russia has forcibly taken and relocated hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian children to Russia.
