SANTA FE, NM — New Mexico’s classrooms are in crisis, and kids are paying the price. Parents across the state are beginning to speak out and take action. Dana Tapia, a Santa Fe mother, pulled her six-year-old son from his New Mexico public school after he was the alleged target of inappropriate behavior from a transgender-identifying classmate and the school’s failure to address the situation.
Today, Independent Women’s Features (IW Features), the grassroots storytelling and investigative journalism arm ofIndependent Women, released a new feature, “How Radical Gender Ideology Pushed One Family Out of New Mexico’s Public Schools,” which exclusively shares Dana and Levi Tapia’s story, exposing the destructive presence of radical gender ideology running rampant and unchecked in New Mexico public schools.
According to Tapia, the situation escalated during Levi’s first-grade year after a male classmate who identified as female began using the girls’ restroom and allegedly engaged in repeated inappropriate behavior in the classroom.
Tapia said that the principal decided there was nothing she could do about the situation without threatening her job security, ultimately prompting Tapia’s family to seek a different educational environment.
“I had a really strong relationship with the principal, and she asked me why I and the other parents couldn’t just go along with this,” Tapia told IW Features. “I told her that we didn’t want to tell our kids a lie.”
After it became clear that nothing would be done by the school or the principal, Tapia enrolled her son in a local Christian school, where she says he is thriving. While committed to remaining in New Mexico, she hopes sharing her family’s experience will encourage greater accountability and transparency in schools.
“[Radical gender ideology] is just a strong part of our culture here,” Tapia said, citing examples from men in women’s restrooms to city-wide pride parades. “It’s really, really hard.”
