Earlier this month, Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee, Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), held a hearing on how schools are failing to educate students while violating parental rights, promoting inappropriate content in classrooms, and even abusing the law.
“Across the country,” Rep. Walberg said in his statement at the hearing, “school districts are losing sight of their core mission: educating students. When school policies affect the safety, privacy, and well-being of children, Congress has a responsibility to ask questions. When parents are excluded from major decisions involving their children, Congress has a responsibility to ask questions. And when classrooms become vehicles for political or ideological agendas rather than places of learning, Congress has a responsibility to ask questions.”
To that end, the hearing featured superintendents from Chicago, San Francisco, and Loudon County, Virginia testify, with the superintendent of Chicago Public Schools, Dr. Macquline King, noting that she had been subpoenaed.
Indeed, these districts were not chosen at random, but are well-known for the scandals that have garnered national attention. Rep. Walberg noted that Chicago Public Schools “introduces [first-grade] students to the concept of ‘gender identity.’ Third-grade material then asks students to ‘Explain the difference between sex assigned at birth and gender identity.’ By fifth grade, CPS introduces students to puberty blockers…Chicago’s policy even allows biological males, on a case-by-case basis, to sleep with biological females on overnight field trips. So does Loudoun County’s.”
Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) has dealt with particularly egregious cases of school authorities prioritizing ideology over education, even at the cost of keeping their students safe: In 2021, a boy—wearing a skirt—was able to go into a girls’ bathroom and sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl. Instead of calling the police on the boy, the school called the police on the father of the victim for confronting the school for its failure to protect his daughter.
This is not LCPS’s only failure with respect to transgender policy. Independent Women’s Network leader Stephanie Lundquist-Arora has exposed through IW Features, “multiple serious incidents have been reported in LCPS in the years following the adoption of Policy 8040, which was approved by the school board in August 2021, and allows students to use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their proclaimed ‘gender identity’ rather than their sex.’” LCPS is currently being investigated by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights as to whether or not the district has committed Title IX violations.
During the hearing, it was shown that San Francisco Public Schools, joins Chicago in promoting and advertising abortion to minors.
When school districts prioritize the promotion of woke ideology in our nation’s schools, they not only risk children’s safety and show disregard toward families, they fail at what they are paid to do: educating the next generation.
