WASHINGTON D.C. — Independent Women’s Law Center applauds the Virginia Supreme Court’s decision striking down Democrats’ unconstitutional redistricting scheme, delivering a decisive victory for the rule of law and the integrity of Virginia’s constitutional process. In a 4–3 ruling, the court held that the General Assembly failed to comply with the constitutional requirements necessary to place the measure on the ballot, rendering the effort “null and void.”
The ruling is a major victory for the rule of law and for every Virginian who expects elections to be conducted legally and fairly, not manipulated through procedural shortcuts designed to entrench political power.
“The Virginia Supreme Court got this exactly right,” said Beth Parlato, senior legal counsel for Independent Women’s Law Center. “The Constitution is not optional. Democrats attempted to push through a blatantly partisan redistricting scheme while disregarding the constitutional process required under Virginia law. Today’s decision is a reminder that the rule of law still matters. This is a resounding victory for Virginia and for America.”
“The Court rightly rejected the idea that constitutional procedures can be ignored for political convenience,” Parlato continued. “Fair representation depends not only on the maps themselves, but on the integrity of the process used to create them. Democrats attempted to rewrite the rules for partisan advantage, and the Court decisively rejected that abuse of power, reaffirming that Virginians deserve lawful governance, not partisan power grabs.”
