WASHINGTON D.C. — As national scrutiny around gender ideology grows, detransitioners are speaking out and sharing their stories with increasing urgency. Today, on Detransitioner Awareness Day, observed annually on March 12, Independent Women ambassadors and detransitioners Soren Aldaco, Prisha Mosley, and Claire Abernathy gather in Washington, D.C., to share their personal stories and expose the real-world consequences of gender ideology, including the very real lifelong harm caused by chemical and surgical mutilation.

To mark the occasion, Independent Women’s Features (IW Features) released a new, exclusive installment of its “Identity Crisis” docu-series, spotlighting the harrowing realities faced by detransitioner Layla Jane, who was prescribed testosterone and underwent a double mastectomy at just 13.

When Jane later sought justice, her case was thrown out because of California’s statute of limitations, which requires medical malpractice cases to be filed within three years of harm. Denied justice, Jane has turned to advocacy and will be in attendance in D.C. for Detransitioner Awareness Day.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:

Each year, detransitioners, medical professionals, and advocates come together in Washington, D.C., to ensure their stories are heard by lawmakers and decision-makers and that, while momentum is in the right direction, the fight to protect children from irreversible medical decisions is not over.

“I can’t put into words the hope I have for Detrans Awareness Day. There’s a real momentum building around this issue, and many of us can feel it,” said Soren Aldaco. “After my hearing at the Texas Supreme Court on February 11, I’m more confident than ever that recent legal developments—like Fox Varian’s $2 million victory in New York—are only the beginning. In the coming years, I believe we will see many such cases. Eventually, beyond detrans awareness, there will be detrans accountability. In other words: justice for detransitioners is coming.”

Aldaco helped organize this year’s celebration on Capitol Hill, which is set to be the largest in-person gathering of detransitioners to date. She added: “Looking forward to this event—and to what appears to be a promising 2026—I call on everyone who has a voice to share our stories. They are far from unique, and our numbers continue to grow.”

“As a detransitioner, I’m excited for the opportunity to be at an event where so many other detransitioners are gathered, alongside doctors, lawyers, and others who are focused on helping us heal within a climate and society that has abandoned us,” said Prisha Mosley. “I hope to be heard and listen to others like me as we share our needs and experiences.”

“Detrans awareness, on March 12th and every other day, is a vital part of the movement against gender ideology,” said Claire Abernathy. “Detransitioners make up those most deeply and permanently harmed. We will never get back what was lost, but we can fight to make sure our stories are heard and that no one else suffers the harm we were subjected to.”

Luke Healy, also an Independent Women ambassador and detransitioner, added: “Detrans Awareness Day has been and will continue to be the most startling refutation of the myth which our government and our medical institutions have pushed on us, that being: gender ideology is harmless.”

“The fact that every major institution in this country spent a decade advocating for child mutilation should give us pause,” said Neeraja Deshpande, Independent Women policy analyst and IW Features senior contributor. “Detrans Awareness Day gives us an opportunity for that much-needed pause, to reflect on the harms done to innocent children.”

THE TIDE IS TURNING ON CHILD MUTILATION

This year’s Detransitioner Awareness Day observance comes at a pivotal moment in the national conversation surrounding pediatric gender medicine as legal challenges mount and public scrutiny increases. As Congress considers legislation—like the Chloe Cole Act inspired by President Donald J. Trump’s executive order to end the chemical and surgical mutilation of minors—recent backpedaling from major medical institutions, including the American Association of Plastic Surgeons and the American Medical Association, and a landmark legal victory in which detransitioner Fox Varian secured a $2 million settlement has reignited the push to stop this horrific practice.

Currently, both Soren Aldaco and Prisha Mosley are pursuing their own legal action against the medical professionals who groomed them, making sure there is no stone left unturned for justice:

EXCLUSIVE NEW IW FEATURES “IDENTITY CRISIS” DOCUMENTARY:

The “Identity Crisis” docu-series, produced by IW Features—the grassroots journalism arm of Independent Women—highlights the stories of detransitioners, experts, and parents fighting to protect children and teens from the irreversible harm of gender ideology.

After being prescribed testosterone and undergoing a double mastectomy at just 13, Layla Jane was denied justice when a court ruled that her medical malpractice claim had been filed outside of California’s three-year statute of limitations.

“All I can hope is that, one day, I can feel somewhat whole again and have a sense of normalcy and just be happy in myself,” Layla Jane told IW Features.

Maybe one day, a child like Jane won’t have to spend her adulthood picking up the pieces of a childhood that ideologues stole.

Throughout this shocking new profile and documentary, Jane discusses how online content about gender identity, therapy referrals, and medical providers quickly led her into a fast-tracked medical transition. Now, Jane has turned to advocacy and is learning how to live with the irreversible.
