WASHINGTON D.C. — As the oppressive Iranian regime escalates violence and instability in the Middle East, Iranian women challenge oppression and brutality at home. This International Women’s Day, Independent Women recognizes women around the world who stand with courage, lead with conviction, and shape a freer and stronger world for the generations that follow—most notably, the bravery of Iranian women facing fierce opposition from a violent regime as they fight for freedom.

Meaghan Mobbs, director of Independent Women’s Center for American Safety and Security, said:

“International Women’s Day reminds us that across history and cultures, the condition of women has been one of the clearest indicators of a civilization’s health. Where women are free, protected, educated, and able to speak with courage, societies are stronger. Where they are silenced, brutalized, or erased, decline follows.

“Women are not peripheral to history. We are often the first to sense disorder and among the first to resist it. From raising families to leading institutions to enduring and confronting tyranny, women carry both the burden and the promise of civilization. Protecting their dignity, freedom, and security is a moral responsibility and a measure of whether a society is worthy of enduring.

“On this day, and every day, may women everywhere continue to stand with courage, lead with conviction, and shape a freer and stronger world for the generations that follow.”

Mobbs penned an op-ed in the American Spectator, just days before Operation Epic Fury, titled The Women Who Would Not Kneel, focused on women in Iran who, earlier this year, led the most profound protest movement in the country since the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Mobbs detailed the consequences of their courage as the women faced brutal treatment for daring to demand their freedom, and she called for greater support to stand with those resisting the regime.

Andi Bottner, senior vice president for external relations at Independent Women and former director of the U.S. State Department’s Office of International Women’s Issues, said:

“International Women’s Day recognizes the contributions, achievements and strength of women across the world. Today, let’s remember the women facing the violence of war as Iran continues to terrorize the Middle East. Thank you to the brave women warriors who are in this fight.”

Qanta Ahmed, senior fellow with Independent Women’s Center for American Safety and Security, said:

“On International Women’s Day, I join Independent Women in saluting the bravery of women, girls, sisters, daughters and, above all, mothers who continue to defy, with extraordinary courage, the misogyny, objectification and dehumanizing barbarity of the Iranian regime.  I stand with all other women and girls around the world in solidarity with their quest for humanity, dignity, and autonomy.”
