WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the SAVE America Act awaits final passage in the U.S. Senate, Independent Women’s Law Center issued the following statement on how this bill will keep elections secure for women:
Beth Parlato, Independent Women’s Law Center senior legal counsel, said:
“The SAVE America Act isn’t about restricting voting. It’s about making sure U.S. elections are decided by U.S. citizens. Current law already requires voters to attest to citizenship under penalty of perjury; this bill simply adds documentary proof at registration. Claims that married women who change their names would lose the ability to vote are simply false and ridiculous. Marriage doesn’t erase a woman’s vote. Women who change their names still vote, and the SAVE America Act doesn’t change that. Citizenship is what determines voting eligibility and ensuring that only eligible citizens can vote is both commonsense and necessary.”
