“The Olympics finally recognized what should’ve been obvious all along: women’s sports are for women.” – Payton McNabb

WASHINGTON D.C. — The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to announce a policy change next year that will bar male athletes from competing in women’s sports categories—a science-based policy that affirms biological reality and restores fairness to women’s athletics on the international stage. The IOC’s policy review confirmed the innate physical advantages of being born male, even when testosterone suppression treatments are utilized. This policy shift will ensure that all female categories are protected, setting a global precedent for restoring fairness in sports.

In the Third Edition of “Competition: Title IX, Male Athletes, and the Threat To Women’s Sports,” Independent Women’s Law Center and Independent Women synthesize the science and explain the changing legal landscape and the future of female athletics, setting the stage for the policy changes being advanced by sports governing bodies like the IOC.

Independent Women’s sports ambassadors react to the IOC policy change announcement:

Payton McNabb, sports ambassador for Independent Women, said: “This decision is common sense—and it’s about time. Women have lost medals, records, and even their health because officials ignored biological reality. Protecting female categories isn’t discrimination—its respect. The Olympics finally recognized what should’ve been obvious all along: women’s sports are for women.”

Linnea Saltz, sports ambassador for Independent Women, said: “I’m elated to see the IOC taking a strong stand for women in sports. It’s time we set emotions aside and focused on the facts, which is exactly what this policy does. Male athletes possess clear biological and physiological advantages over female-born competitors, and recognizing that reality is essential for fairness. I’m excited to see the Olympics return to being a truly two-sex competition.”

Cynthia Monteleone, sports ambassador for Independent Women, said: “I fully support Kirsty Coventry and the IOC for taking this stand—it’s a matter of common sense and fairness. No one is being banned; males are simply welcome to compete in their own category while we preserve the integrity of women’s sport.”

The IOC policy change follows the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee’s (USOPC) decision to update its athlete safety policy, now including a section in line with President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order to keep men out of women’s sports.

Throughout the 2024 Summer Olympic games in Paris, Independent Women remained a vocal proponent of keeping men out of international competitions and repeatedly called on the USOPC and International Olympic Committee to protect female athletes from competing against men.
