WASHINGTON, D.C. – An increased percentage of vulnerable minors are struggling with a rapidly growing social contagion — the transgender contagion.
For one teen from Boston, Simon Amaya Price, transgenderism became a cult he ultimately escaped.
Before becoming an adult, he had experienced overwhelming trauma — from severe bullying that left him physically bloody and mentally broken to a sexual assault that left him feeling like he had no social network.
Independent Women’s Features (IW Features), the grassroots storytelling and original journalism arm of Independent Women, in the first part of a new two-part documentary released today, elevates Simon’s story, where he bravely sounds the alarm on the transgender cult he once embraced and showcases the dangers of the very real transgender contagion and how fast it can spread. This is part of IW Features’ “Identity Crisis: Real Stories About Escaping Gender Ideology” series, which was established in 2022.

In high school after his sexual assault and constant barrage of homophobic bullying, Simon, feeling like he had no other social network, turned to his school’s Gay-Straight Alliance Club, where he told IW Features he was “hoping he’d find the support he needed to navigate the mental weight he had been carrying. But ‘instead of talking about homophobia’ or why ‘being gay is cool and OK,’ the GSA focused on transgenderism.”
“Between the time I left after 10th grade and the time my class graduated, one-sixth of the boys in my grade identified as transgender, and a similar proportion continued in the grades below me,” Simon told IW Features, adding that he feels responsible for spreading transgender ideology in his high school. At the time, he said he truly felt he was helping the most vulnerable students find who they were, part of what the transgender movement calls “egg cracking.”
Simon himself is considered a “desister,” as he never medically transitioned. During his first year at Berklee College of Music, where he socially transitioned, he said his peers and professors accepted his identity without question.
But at the end of his freshman year, Simon was canceled by the same people after he publicly rejected affirmative action as a counterproductive and harmful policy when the topic came up in one of his classes. This experience awakened Simon to the cult he had been a part of.
Speaking to the social contagion aspect of transgenderism, Simon told IW Features, “If my peers were not accepting of transgenderism and gender ideology, I doubt I would’ve done it, genuinely, because it would’ve been too hard, too impractical.”
Kaylee McGhee White, Independent Women’s Features’ editor-in-chief and documentary producer, said: “Simon’s story speaks to the social pull gender ideology has among vulnerable young adults struggling with their body image and sense of belonging. But as Simon himself discovered, transgenderism doesn’t fix these mental struggles. In fact, it often only exacerbates them. True fulfillment for Simon only came when he stopped trying to change his identity and instead accepted who he was. His is a lesson that countless young adults today could benefit from.”
Integral in Simon’s story is his dad’s determination to prevent him from medically mutilating his body, something that at the time Simon said he hated him for. Thanks to his dad, Gareth Amaya Price, Simon did not undergo permanent, life-altering procedures like many others who self-identified as transgender. In part two of this “Identity Crisis” documentary, set to be released in November, Simon’s father will speak out about pervasive gender ideology and his role in helping Simon escape this cult.
The “Identity Crisis: Real Stories About Escaping Gender Ideology” series has become a national platform for detransitioners and their loved ones. With raw honesty, the series has revealed the graphic realities of “transition”—from double mastectomies gone wrong, to clitoral growth, to trapped milk ducts, and hairy bodies.
