WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States has consistently proven to be a land of opportunity and a beacon of hope for hundreds of millions of people over nearly 250 years. The stories of five women – former U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, Claudia Puig, Leslie Sanchez, Andeliz Castillo, and Neri Martinez – prove this reality.
In a new article in the popular “Champion Women” series, Independent Women Features (IW Features), the grassroots storytelling and original journalism arm of Independent Women, highlights the tenacity of each woman and their stories of influence and impact.

Puig and Ros-Lentinen were born in Cuba and had to flee as children because of communism. Despite facing hardship at such young ages, both women overcame adversity and thrived in their own ways. Ros-Lentinen, for example, became the first Latina woman and Cuban-American elected to the U.S. Congress.
Castillo herself is the daughter and granddaughter of Cuban exiles so, as she told IW Features, she understands “the importance of the free markets, free enterprise,” as well as “democracy and freedom and pro-human rights.”
Sanchez, a sixth-generation Texan, rose through the ranks to land a director role in President George W. Bush’s White House, while Martinez served as a political appointee during President Trump’s first term in office as well as chief of staff for Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina.
“The story of each woman featured in this month’s ‘Champion Women’ profile is inspiring and serves as an example that the American Dream is alive and well. I am so honored to highlight their careers and impact,” said Samantha Aschieris, senior contributor for Independent Women Features and producer of the “Champion Women” series.
