WASHINGTON, D.C. – As part of its efforts to investigate state laws that are adversely affecting the national economy or interstate commerce, the Department of Justice has solicited public comments. Today, on the deadline of the public comment period, Independent Women submitted a comment urging policymakers and administrators to carefully consider the full costs and burdens created by regulations and other government programs.
Executive Order 14219 directed federal agencies to initiate a process to review all regulations that impose burdens on small businesses and hinder private enterprise and entrepreneurship. Independent Women identified four areas for consideration on reform to improve economic outcomes:
- Independent Contracting
- Occupational Licensing
- Paid Leave Laws
- Online Sales Taxes
Patrice Onwuka, director of Independent Women’s Center for Economic Opportunity, said:
“This topic is relevant and timely for the nation’s 35 million small businesses, especially the 12 million female-owned small firms. An overwhelming majority of women-owned businesses do not employ staff. They depend on outside experts and contractors to operate. Increased regulations and taxes enact heavier burdens on non-employer firms.
“Independent Women appreciates the opportunity to comment on this proposed rule. It’s incredibly important that policymakers and administrators carefully consider the full costs and burdens created by regulations and other government programs, so the public can weigh their costs and benefits. We look forward to the DOJ’s investigation of these and other pertinent issues.”
