“The best time to fix this was years, if not decades, ago, but the second best time is now.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Independent Women issued the following statement in response to the recent NAEP results that confirm American students are testing at historic lows across all of K-12 education.
Neeraja Deshpande, policy analyst with Independent Women, said:
“The fact that kids are graduating without basic skills is a travesty, but, frankly, it is also completely unsurprising: What did we think was going to happen when we let unions control schools and allow activists to put ideology above academics? What did we think would happen to the generation that was subjected to school closures and onerous mandates? The best time to fix this was years, if not decades, ago, but the second best time is now. We can invest in good teachers, excise radical ideology from classrooms, and promote school choice alongside improving our public schools.”
Independent Women this year released a report, authored by Deshpande, titled “Give Teachers a Break: Cutting Red Tape to Unleash the Potential of America’s Great Teachers.” The report addressed decline in the classroom, including:
- Why the nation is losing its most effective teachers;
- How misguided policies—not educators—are sabotaging student success; and
- Practical, commonsense reforms to restore order, trust, and excellence in our classrooms.
