WASHINGTON, D.C. – At just 10 years old, Luke Healy was groomed online. By 13, he handed his parents a sticky note announcing a new name, a new identity, and a list of demands. Backed by school counselors and affirmed by doctors, Luke was ushered onto a path of medical transition. But one person refused to go along: his mother.
Today, Independent Women Features (IW Features), the grassroots storytelling and original journalism arm of Independent Women, released the latest documentary in its “Identity Crisis” series, featuring Luke Healy and his mother Michelle Rodgers, who are speaking out together for the first time.

Rodgers, a registered nurse with over three decades of experience, saw through the deception. “My gut reaction was, ‘Something’s terribly wrong.’ All I kept thinking is, ‘Somebody’s hurting my kid,’” she recalled.
Now, in the aftermath of Healy’s detransition, Rodgers is very clear: she wants justice for her son and the countless other youth tricked into a delusion. Of medical practitioners pushing transition, she told IW Features, “I think that these people should be held accountable, and I think that they should go to jail. This is a crime. It is abuse.”
Healy, who is now 24, shared with IW Features how he was groomed at just 10 years old by older adults in online social media fandoms and chat forums. Then, when Healy was 13 years old, he handed his parents a sticky note declaring he was a transgender girl—pansexual, with a new name, and a list of demands.
While at the time Rodgers didn’t know what “pansexual” meant, she knew whatever was happening with Healy was not good.
At 18 years old, Healy bypassed his parents’ resistance and started on hormones attained through Planned Parenthood. According to Healy, his school counselors, low-cost Kaiser Permanente therapists, and every institutional figurehead had already decided he was “transgender” and needed to be placed on the track to social and medical transition. After surgery consultations, Healy discovered that the lies kept building.
Eventually, Luke found a new relationship with faith. After beginning to listen to Catholic homilies, Luke discovered Dr. Jordan Peterson’s videos and written works. The teachings within them helped rescue Luke from the trans cult. And shortly thereafter, Luke decided to cut off his hair, call himself “Luke” again, and never looked back.
“Luke Healy was groomed into a lie and nearly lost to a medical system that profits from insecurity and teenage confusion. His story hurts to hear, but in a culture increasingly captured by gender ideology, it’s not rare,” said Andrea Mew, IW Features managing editor. “What sets Luke apart, however, is that he came back. And his mom, Michelle, a nurse who refused to be silent, never stopped fighting for him.
“Our breaking documentary stands as a lesson for parents similarly targeted by gender ideologues because, as Michelle warned, ‘Take charge, or you will lose your children, and they will become a product of something you can’t imagine,’” Mew added.
The IW Features “Identity Crisis: Real Stories About Escaping Gender Ideology” docu-series features stories from detransitioners, experts, and parents fighting to protect children and teens from the irreversible harms of gender ideology. From “top surgery,” nipples peeling off, clitoral growth, trapped milk ducts, and hairy bodies, Identity Crisis documentaries bring to light the graphic stories of young adults now reckoning with the physical and emotional scars of gender ideology.
Detransitioner Chloe Cole, who is now friends with Luke Healy, was featured in b-roll for portions of Luke Healy and Michelle Rodgers’ documentary. IW Features profiled Chloe Cole’s detransition journey in February 2023, for another episode of its “Identity Crisis” docu-series.
