WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Independent Women Features (IW Features), the grassroots storytelling and original journalism arm of Independent Women, released a new op-ed by U.S. Representative Kevin Kiley (R-CA) on how California Governor Gavin Newson’s administration is wasting taxpayer dollars by resisting Title IX enforcement, choosing to prolong discrimination rather than end it.

Recently, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) found that California was in violation of Title IX by allowing biological males to compete in girls’ and women’s sports. Rather than complying and changing policies, California officials resisted, choosing to embrace a costly legal fight with the Department of Justice.

As Chairman of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, Rep. Kiley leads Congressional oversight on ensuring equal opportunity for women and girls in education and sports per Title IX’s intent. In this op-ed, Rep. Kiley promises that he and his colleagues will “relentlessly pursue and deploy every tool available to enforce accountability and defend the rights of female athletes.”

In his op-ed, written exclusively for IW Features, Rep. Kiley expands on the consequences of California’s refusal to correct course on women’s sports, saying:

“Girls in California have lost records, scholarships, and spots on teams. They’ve been forced to compete against and share locker rooms with biological males. Some have suffered debilitating physical injuries while others watched their dreams slip away because state leaders refuse to enforce the most basic protections Title IX was designed to provide.”

Not only this, but Rep. Kiley also points out that by choosing this fight rather than standing with women, Gavin Newsom may ultimately cost California billions in federal funding as the Trump administration seeks to hold the state accountable.

In his closing message, Rep. Kiley reiterates the inherent discrimination being advanced by Governor Newsom’s administration saying: “This is not a political debate; it’s a civil rights issue.”

Kaylee McGhee White, editor-in-chief for IW Features, said: “California and Gov. Gavin Newsom’s decision to double down on radical policies that jeopardize women’s safety and privacy is politically foolish—and costly. Because of the state’s refusal to uphold Title IX, Californians will now see millions of their hard-earned taxpayer dollars go toward a legal battle the state ultimately will lose. They also risk losing billions more in federal resources that fund critical programs throughout the Golden State. Californians deserve better. Thankfully, they are finding better representation in Rep. Kevin Kiley and other Republicans willing to stand for what’s right.”

IW Features has highlighted the stories of female athletes, students, and inmates who have lost the safety of single-sex spaces and sports and suffered under California’s radical gender policies.
