WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Independent Women released the following statement on the Department of Justice’s announcement that they filed a lawsuit against the state of California for violating federal law and failing to uphold Title IX by knowingly allowing males to compete in women’s sports.

Beth Parlato, Senior Legal Advisor of Independent Women’s Law Center, said: “I commend the U.S. Department of Justice for taking decisive action in filing suit against the State of California for its continued violation of Title IX and failure to protect California women and girls. As the DOJ’s complaint makes clear, allowing males to compete in female sports undermines equal opportunities and is unlawful. California’s policy has displaced female athletes, deprived them of scholarships, trophies and roster spots, and has jeopardized their safety and privacy. Governor Newsom himself admitted this is ‘deeply unfair’ yet he continues in his failure to safeguard the rights of female athletes. This willful contempt for the rule of law comes with a hefty price tag: California will lose nearly $45 billion in education funding, which is a necessary and justified response to the state’s continued defiance of federal law.”
